The Bay Islands have always been a destination that captures imaginations. With their stunning beaches, Garífuna culture, and unique Black English-speaking heritage, it’s no wonder people from all over the world are drawn here. But in recent years, there’s been a surge of foreigners creating businesses tied to our history, culture, and tourism. From magazines and websites to maps and television programs, the Bay Islands are being showcased in more ways than ever before.
Some of these efforts are wonderful, adding value by sharing our beauty and traditions in ways that draw people to our shores. But not all publicity hits the mark. The other day, someone mentioned a foreign-run magazine advertising the Bay Islands as a destination—but using photos of islands that weren’t even part of our region. That’s misleading at best and dishonest at worst.
Another example is the misinformation being shared about our Garifuna community in Punta Gorda. Some publications list the Garifuna’s arrival as happening on dates tied to Belize’s history instead of ours, creating confusion and erasing the distinct story of the Bay Islands.
This kind of false data and misleading imagery often comes from people who, while enthusiastic, don’t have a deep connection to or understanding of our history. As a result, they end up misrepresenting the very culture they aim to celebrate.
While it’s flattering to see outsiders captivated by the Bay Islands, there’s a growing movement of native Bay Islanders stepping up to share our story—accurately and with pride. Over the last few years, we’ve seen an incredible rise in local talent creating and redesigning how we present ourselves to the world.
A new podcast launching soon in Roatan aims to explore our culture and history in ways that resonate with locals and visitors alike.
Genealogy and biographical books are preserving the rich family histories that define our community.
Poetry books are offering intimate glimpses into the hearts and minds of Bay Islanders.
Organizations like the Historical and Cultural Preservation Society are working to safeguard our heritage for future generations.
These efforts are a proof of the creativity and passion of Bay Islanders. We know our story best, and when we tell it, it brims with authenticity.
While it’s wonderful to have foreigners interested in sharing the Bay Islands with the world, it’s important that we, as a community, support our own as well. Native storytellers bring a depth and richness to their work that comes from truly living the Bay Islands experience. By supporting local creators—whether it’s buying a book, tuning into a podcast, or sharing a social media post—we ensure that our story is told the way it deserves to be told.
When you see a Bay Islander pouring their heart into preserving and promoting our culture, take a moment to celebrate their efforts. Show them your support, because every voice matters.
As we continue to see this rise in local storytellers, we also set an example for outsiders. By showing how it’s done—with accuracy, passion, and respect—we can guide those who wish to share our culture. The Bay Islands are a unique place, and it’s up to us to ensure that our legacy is preserved and shared the right way. I’ll be sharing these efforts from islanders throughout the Bay Islands so you guys get to know about them.
So, the next time you come across someone sharing the Bay Islands’ story, take a closer look. Are they getting it right? If it’s one of our own, don’t hesitate to show them the support they deserve. Together, we can ensure that the Bay Islands’ story is told with the heart, authenticity, and pride that only we can bring.
