How much have you heard about treasures found on the island of Utila? Let’s go over this ancient one…

The island of Utila is known for its pristine beaches and world-famous coral reefs. But beneath its picturesque surface lies a +100 year old mystery that intrigued both locals and visitors back then.

Hidden within Brandon Hill, a cave known simply as “The Cave” held secrets from Utila’s past. It’s not just any cave, this one actually had treasures! A golden goblet, a rusty sword, and a golden crucifix were discovered within its depths, leaving everyone to wonder: how did these objects end up here? Theories were many.

Was the goblet used in pirate rituals, hidden away in the cave as part of pirate treasure?

Could the crucifix be a relic of early religious settlers, looking for solace and a place of worship in the island’s caves?

The truth remains a mystery however, the finder of these treasures back then, understandably captivated by their allure, sold them to a local merchant. The goblet even made its way to Comayagua, the former capital of Honduras, for an exhibition, further fueling speculation about its origins.

The story of the golden goblet is proof that Utila’s history is as rich and layered as the coral reefs that surround it.

PS. In case you are wondering, Brandon Hill is right behind the airport before reaching Pumpkin Hill, and right next to Kurts Cave. If you still don’t know, you need to find out because… mmm well it’s important to know these “thangs”.
