THE EDITOR IN CHIEF
Roger Bjoroy-Karlsen is the Editor in Chief and the creator of Bay Islands Magazine
Born in 1962, he is a retired officer of the Norwegian Army. He is also a freelance writer, and used to provide articles for newspapers, glossy history magazines, and essays and chronicles for different media in Europe.
He is from the coastal town of Sandefjord in South-East Norway, started out as a seaman traveling the world before he joined the Army in 1981 and became an Infantry officer.
He has been deployed in military operations in Lebanon, Kosovo, Macedonia (now North-Macedonia), Iraq, and Afghanistan. After several years as a staff officer and advisor in combat zones such as Iraq and Afghanistan, he developed post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after being under severe pressure.
Being disabled in 2019 after several suicide attempts and a lot of mental treatment he and his wife decided to move to a place with more sunlight and warmer days. You can run but you can’t hide, but you can find better places to cope with your challenges. So now they live on the island of Roatan, which is the largest island in the Bay Islands, belonging to Honduras.
He is married to Angela Claire, his third wife, and thanks to her he is alive today, taking all the battles with a wounded war veteran. He got three children from previous marriages, all grown up.
Roger is also a skilled singer/ song-writer/ composer/ keyboardist, and released his album “Yonder – Distant but Within Sight” under the name of Roger Helmers in 2008. These songs are more or less aspects of being a soldier and a war veteran. He is now and then performing concerts, mainly for charity.
